Inside the world of Caviar Chips

The new status symbol: Champagne with Caviar Chips

The tradition to celebrate with Champagne precedes the French Revolution of 1789. It originated in the Royal Courts of Europe as the most expensive drink and therefore as the ultimate status symbol. After the revolution, celebrating with champagne replaced religious rituals: you could christen a ship with a bottle of champagne without a priest.

What many don't know is that corking and bottling of drinks containing carbon dioxide was invented in England in the 1500's. It took centuries to perfect the process.

I had the chance to read the manuscript of the soon to be publish book "SOBOR", an aristocratic adventure story. In the book, Caviar Chips are described as the ultimate status symbol savoured in secrecy by the Rich and Famous.

And of course, I had to try them. After contacting the author, I was put in contact with the maker of this most extraordinary snack. What can I say...

With a view on the harbour of Monaco, I was presented with a glass of the most expensive champagne. On top of the glass was a round black chip. You could clearly distinguish every caviar grain.

Black and grey colours dominated the strange dry object which looked as it only served to preserve the champagne bubbles inside the glass. I took it in my hand and the bubbles escaped slowly. I taste the Champagne first and then took a bite of the Caviar Chip. It was an explosion of taste. The Caspian caviar used to make the chip complimented perfectly the champagne.

I learned that Champagne and Caviar Chips parties are organised as if they were secret societies. Nothing better was invented since the Royal Courts had to share their privilege with the common people since the French Revolution.

Now, status has a new name: Caviar Chips.

A culinary invention which took years to perfect and protected by a patent.

The world has changed, but the new privileged have found a way to distinguish themselves and celebrate as never before.
